Honeywell Door/Window sensor not reading closed

If your 5816 Door/Window sensor is not reading closed, it usually means that the sensor (bigger part) and the magnet (smaller part) have been separated, this can happen for a few different reasons:

1. Check that the magnet is still attached to the door. If it has fallen off, reattach it with 3M plastic adhesive or a durable double stick tape. Install it where it was located before, ensuring that the space between the magnet, and the sensor is less than 1/2 an inch.
2. The magnet and the sensor are too far apart. This can happen especially if you are in a climate where it either gets very cold, or very hot. The contraction and expansion of building materials in the home can cause the magnet to move away from the sensor causing it to read open all the time. You can fix this by removing the magnet, and reinstalling it closer to the sensor ensuring that there is no more than 1/2 an inch in between the magnet and the sensor.
3. If the magnet has fallen and cannot be found, contact Technical Support, for a replacement.

4. If the magnet and sensor are properly installed, and the sensor is still reading open, contact Technical Support.

Tamper on Honeywell Door/Window sensor

1. Locate the sensor that is tampering, by verifying the zone number, and location of that sensor on the alarm panel.
2. Place the alarm panel in Wwalk Test mode.
3. Go to the sensor on the door.

4. Locate the locking tab on the sensor.
5. Depress the locking tab with a tool of some kind (a butter knife or small screwdriver works well.

6. Once the locking tab of the sensor has been released, pull the lid of the sensor away, freeing it and exposing the inside of the sensor.

7. With the sensor’s cover removed, you will adjust the tamper switch of the sensor. Locate the tamper switch,
   
   and bend the free end of the switch upward giving it more room to articulate, and impinge on the lid of the sensor.

8. Now that the switch has been bent secure the lid of the sensor. To do this, secure the end opposite the locking tab
   then rock the lid down over the locking tab securing it in place.

9. Now that the lid of the sensor is properly secured onto the sensor, we will want to reboot the panel.
10. Once the panel has been rebooted, test the sensor by opening the sensor that was affected. If no tamper returns, the sensor has been fixed. If the tamper returns, the sensor may need to be replaced, at this point contact our Technical Support department.

False alarm on Honeywell Door/Window sensor

If your Door/Window sensor is causing false alarms while the alarm system is armed, it is usually caused by the magnet being too far away from the sensor. This is an issue because the magnet needs to be within range of the sensor for it to read properly. Sometimes it can be just far enough that it will work most of the time, but occasionally cause false alarms. In order to fix this, remove the magnet for the sensor from where it is installed, and reinstall it closer to the sensor.

Honeywell Door/Window sensor loss of supervision

If a 5816 Door/Window sensor is showing a loss of supervision, this means that for whatever reason, the sensor is not being monitored by the alarm panel. To ensure that the sensor is being monitored properly perform the following troubleshooting steps.

1. Perform a walk test on the sensor.
2. If this sensor has a history of low battery, the battery may have died completely, and is no longer being monitored as it no longer has power. If this is the case replace the battery in the sensor. If you do not know how to do this view the "How to change the battery in Honeywell Door/Window sensor" article.
3. Ensure that the sensor is within range of the panel. It needs to be within 150 feet of the panel, with minimal interference, (walls, doors, etc.) If the signal strength is the issue, you can confirm that by performing a Go no Go test. If the Go no GO test fails, more equipment will need to be installed. Contact our Technical Support department for assistance.
