How to change the batteries in a 2GIG Smoke Detector


  1. Locate the sensor that has a low battery, by verifying the zone number, and location of that sensor on the alarm panel.
  2. Place the alarm panel in Walk Test mode.
  3. Go to the sensor showing the low batteries.
  4. Twist the sensor counterclockwise, and pull straight down to remove it from the mounting plate.
  5. Now that the sensor is open, you can see the batteries located inside.
  6. Remove the old batteries from the sensor, by pulling it straight up out of the batteries tray.
  7. Now that the batteries have been removed from the sensor, replace them with new AAA batteries.
  8. Pay close attention to the orientation of the batteries in the battery trays. The batteries will have a positive side, and a negative side, and the battery trays will have the proper orientation marked.
  9. Once the batteries have been replaced, you will need to replace the sensor on the mounting plate
  10. Place the sensor on the mounting plate, and turn it clockwise until it clicks securely into place
  11. Now that the sensor is properly secured onto the mounting plate, reboot the panel.
  12. Once the panel has been rebooted, test the sensor for proper function. If you do not know how to do this, contact Technical Support.

Moving a 2GIG Smoke Detector

Moving a 2GIG Smoke Detector


If you need to move your Smoke Detector because of false alarms, or a remodel, you will need to contact our Technical Support department for assistance, as the Smoke Detector will need to be installed properly to ensure proper function. There are also some localities that require Smoke Detectors to be installed by a certified installer, in these cases a technician would need to be sent to move the Smoke Detector for you.

  1. Place the alarm panel in Walk Test mode.
  2. Go to the sensor that you want to test.
  3. Locate the test button on the case of the sensor.
  4. Using your finger, press the test button on the sensor until it beeps four times. The Smoke Detector will continue to beep 5 more times after the button is released.
  5. Check the alarm panel, and make sure that the sensor has tripped.
  6. If the sensor has tripped you have successfully tested your Smoke Detector.

  1. Locate the sensor that is showing the tamper, by verifying the zone number, and location of that sensor on the alarm panel.
  2. Place the alarm panel in Walk Test mode.
  3. Go to the sensor showing the tamper.
  4. Twist the sensor counterclockwise until it stops turning, then rotate the sensor clockwise again until it clicks fully into place.
  5. Now that the sensor is properly secured onto the mounting plate, reboot the panel.
  6. Once the panel has been rebooted, test the sensor for proper function. If you do not know how to do this, contact Technical Support.

Testing false alarms on a 2GIG Smoke Detector


There are a couple of things that can cause false alarms on your Smoke Detector, including smoke from cooking, steam from showers or baths, dust in the air from cleaning, or construction, even overspray from paint. If you are receiving false alarms on your Smoke Detector, check that none of these things are present. If the Smoke Detector has been installed for an extended amount of time, you can also clean the sensing chamber of the detector by using a vacuum, or a can of compressed air. If you have checked all of these things, and you are still receiving false alarms on the Smoke Detector, contact Technical Support.

2GIG Smoke Detector loss of supervision


If a Smoke Detector is showing a loss of supervision, this means that for whatever reason, the sensor is not being monitored by the alarm panel. To ensure that the sensor is being monitored properly perform the following troubleshooting steps.

  1. Perform a walk test on the sensor. If the sensor trips on the panel, it is being monitored. If not, further troubleshooting will be required.
  2. If this sensor has a history of low battery, the battery may have died completely, and is no longer being monitored as it no longer has power. If this is the case, replace the batteries in the sensor. If you do not know how to do this see our article titled "How to change the batteries in a 2GIG Smoke Detecor".
  3. Ensure that the sensor is within range of the panel. It needs to be within 150 feet of the panel, with minimal interference, (walls, doors, etc.) If signal strength is the issue, more equipment will need to be installed. Contact our Technical Support department for assistance.
  4. If none of these reasons explain the loss of supervision of the sensor, you will need to contact our Technical Support department for assistance.

What to do if 2GIG Smoke Detector is beeping


If your Smoke Detector is beeping, one of three things is happening, either it is going off due to a smoke alarm, thermal alarm, or the battery has been low for 7 days. If the battery is low, and you are being alerted to it by the sensor chirping every 48 seconds, you will want to replace the battery in the sensor as soon as possible.
